The Mayor's Anti-Gang Office has been awarded funds from the Governor's Criminal Justice Division through its Juvenile Justice Local Grants Program. The purpose of these grants are to provide funding to support programs that address juvenile delinquency through education, training, prevention, diversion, treatment and rehabilitation.
The Anti-Gang Office and the Parks and Recreation Department have partnered to develop and implement the Houston Youth Green Corps, a 12-month program designed to divert youth from a path of serious or chronic delinquency. The initiative combines age appropriate career exploration and coaching with job training and service learning initiatives that focus on green jobs. Youth will work through job readiness and career exploration lessons with Anti-Gang Office counselors, and participate in service learning projects with Parks and Recreation staff in preparation for summer apprenticeships with the Parks Department through the Summer Jobs Program.
The grant funds will be used for supplies and operating costs.
