Approve an Agreement to accept the donation of a stainless steel sculpture titled Edge of Sky by artist Brower Hatcher to be placed at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and become part of the City of Houston art collection.
SPECIFIC EXPLANATION:
Edge of Sky, appraised at $300,000.00 is a structural matrix made of stainless steel, custom connectors and mixed media embedments depicting elements that make-up the greatness of the City of Houston; such as the oil and gas industry (derrick sculpture), innovations in the medical field (DNA sculpture), NASA (shuttle sculpture), and our Texas heritage represented by horses, wagon wheels, etc. The work will be wall-mounted and measures forty (40) feet in length, eight (8) feet in height, and four (4) feet in depth and weighs approximately 300 pounds.
Brookfield Properties Partners is undertaking an extensive renovation of 2 Allen Center that does not accommodate a new site for the work, and therefore, the donation of Edge of Sky is necessary. Recognizing the increasing significance of the public art program at the Houston Airport System facilities, Brookfield Properties would like to gift the City of Houston art collection at the Houston Airport System with this extraordinary work of public art to be shared with the traveling public.
Edge of Sky was reviewed by the Houston Arts Alliance (HAA) at their regular meeting on Wednesday, February 10, 2016. HAA unanimously recommends that Edge of Sky be accepted for inclusion in the City of Houston art collection.
The Houston Airport System is honored to have Edge of Sky located at George Bush Intercontinental Airport/Houston as part of the City of Houston art collection and recommends that City Council approve an Agreement to accept the donation of Edge of Sky.
