The Houston Parks and Recreation Department (HPARD) requests Council approval to submit an Urban Outdoor Recreation grant application to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department (TPWD). The grant application must be submitted to TPWD by October 1, 2015. HPARD is requesting $1,000,000 in grant assistance for improvements at Brock Park. The total proposed grant project cost estimate is $2,000,000. The source of the City’s required $1,000,000 match is the Park Consolidated Construction Fund. If the grant is awarded, further Council Action will be required to appropriate the funds.
Brock Park is a 354.85-acre, regional park located at 8201 John Ralston Rd, Houston TX 77078. Current park amenities include a golf course, two ball fields, a walking trail, and picnic areas. The proposed project brings new and different public recreation amenities to the region and increases opportunities for Houstonians and visitors to practice outdoor sports and adventure skills and enjoy an active, healthy lifestyle. Bayou Greenways 2020 will develop connections to the park along Greens Bayou and Halls Bayou, both of which run through the park.
The planned project will repurpose the golf course and connect all areas of the park to create Brock Adventure Park. Proposed new park amenities may include disc golf, zip lining course, cross country running trails, an off-leash dog park, off-road bike trails, several canoe and kayak launch points and hike and bike trails. The proposed $2 million grant project is the first phase in developing Brock Adventure Park.
Council approval is recommended.
