In accordance with the Mayor’s Executive Order 1-47, the Chief of Police for the Houston Police Department requests City Council approval to rename the Northeast Patrol Station located at 8301 Ley Rd, District B, as the Hiram “Art” Contreras Northeast Police Station.

The required 30-day notice for the name change was provided to the public via the Houston Chronicle and by electronic distribution to applicable neighborhood/civic associations.

Retired Assistant Chief of Police Hiram “Art” Contreras served the City of Houston and the Houston Police Department in many capacities. Assistant Chief Contreras joined the Houston Police Department as a member of Police Cadet Class number 25, and embarked on a career that spanned almost 40 years. During his tenure, Assistant Chief Contreras oversaw the Major Offenders Division, which targets high-profile career felons, and the Criminal Intelligence Division, which works with federal agencies on dignitary protection and special threat situations. In 1997, President Bill Clinton honored Chief Contreras by nominating him for the position of the United States Marshal for the Southern District of Texas. During his long career, Chief Contreras was honored numerous times by letters of commendation from his supervisors and the citizens he served, including several letters from former Mayor Bob Lanier and other members of City Council. He received two Chief of Police Commendations from former Chief of Police Lee Brown. Chief Contreras’ active community involvement throughout the years emphasizes the dedication he has shown professionally and personally. He is recognized by those who served with him as an outstanding officer, supervisor and administrator. His many years of outstanding service to his department and the City of Houston have been commendable and will leave a strong legacy of performance that others will emulate. The Houston Police Department is honored to name its Northeast Patrol Station as the “Hiram ‘Art’ Contreras Northeast Patrol Station.”
