Chapter 33, Section 33-222 of the Code of Ordinances allows for City Council to designate a Landmark or Protected Landmark upon application by property owner.
This application for Protected Landmark designation of Braswell Building at 5613 Almeda Road was initiated by the owners. Property ownership documents were submitted and verified by the Legal Department.
A public hearing was held on December 14, 2023 by the Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission. Two persons attended the hearing and expressed opposition to the designation. The Houston Archaeological and Historical Commission had no objections and determined that the application satisfied applicable criteria of the ordinance and unanimously recommended approval of the Protected Landmark designation.
City Council held a public hearing on the designation request on Wednesday, June 26, 2024, 9:00 a.m., in the City Hall Council Chambers. Notice of the public hearing date was published in a local newspaper of general circulation. Four persons attended the hearing. Three spoke in support of the designation; and one person spoke in opposition, and also read comments from an additional opponent to the designation.
The Planning and Development Department recommends that City Council approve the designation of 5613 Almeda Road as a Protected Landmark.
