The Planning and Development Department received a request for an Honorary Street Marker honoring Pastor M.L. Jackson. The policies and procedures for Honorary Street Markers were established by City Council motion in 1993 as a way for the community to recognize individuals who have contributed significantly to the Houston Community through service or other accomplishments.
Pastor M.L. Jackson was an exemplary figure in the 5th Ward Community, serving as the dedicated pastor of Bethlehem Baptist Church for 47 years and continuing as Pastor Emeritus for 7 more years. His significant contributions included advocating for quality education, acting as a mentor and father figure to young community members, and the establishment of an education scholarship. He also held leadership roles in local and national organizations, impacting both church and community life. His support for local government and his unwavering commitment to community betterment solidified his place as a respected pillar of his community.
The Planning and Development Department recommends City Council approval of a sign that reads Pastor M.L. Jackson. The proposed marker is in compliance with the City's Honorary Street Marker Policy and will be located at the intersection of Meadow Street and Green Street. The Traffic Division of Houston Public Works is responsible for the fabrication, installation, and maintenance of the marker.
