The Chief of Police for the Houston Police Department (HPD) recommends that City Council approve an ordinance authorizing the acceptance of grant funds in the amount of $3,871,293.00 through the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) for the FY2021 High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas (HIDTA) Program. The grant period is from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022. This award represents the 31st year of funding for the Houston Police Department.
The purpose of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Program is to reduce drug trafficking and production in the Houston. HPD intends to use the funding for investigative and support staff overtime, supplies, lease vehicles, investigative travel, and training.
The Houston Police Department also requests City Council to authorize the Chief of Police or his designee to act as the City’s representative in the application process with the authority to apply for, accept and expend the grant funds as awarded, and apply for, accept and expend all subsequent awards, if any, to extend the budget period, and to authorize the Mayor to execute all related agreements with the approval of the City Attorney in connection with the grant not to exceed five years.
