Background:

SUBJECT: Approval of the traffic calming devices in various neighborhoods.

RECOMMENDATION: Adopt a motion to approve permanent speed cushions to mitigate speeding problems in various neighborhoods throughout the City.

SPECIFIC EXPLANATION: The neighborhoods listed below submitted applications to the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program (NTMP) to request mitigation of speeding issues within the neighborhoods. For each neighborhood, HPW conducted Investigations, developed a traffic calming plan, and presented the plan to residents. Input from the community was evaluated and the traffic calming plan was revised as appropriate. The attached neighborhood maps depict locations of the speed cushions recommended by HPW for each neighborhood. Based on the results of the traffic study and/or the consensus of public opinion supporting the installation of the traffic calming devices, HPW recommends that City Council adopt a motion approving the installation of permanent speed cushions in accordance with the City Code of Ordinances.

HISTORY: The Neighborhood Traffic Management Program is governed by Article XV of Chapter 45 of the City Code of Ordinances. The Program aims to reduce speeding and cut-through traffic problems and improve quality of life. The Neighborhood Traffic Management Program has worked with neighborhoods throughout the City to address speeding and cut-through traffic issues. Speed cushions have been installed in these neighborhoods. The Department is requesting the City Council to approve these speed cushions as permanent traffic calming devices. The speed cushions have been installed in various neighborhoods throughout the City in the last 12 months after meeting the requirements of the Neighborhood Traffic Management Program. Their locations are depicted on the neighborhood maps.
