Summary:

ORDINANCE approving and authorizing submission of an electronic application to the TEXAS DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION for the FY2018 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program Commercial Motor Vehicle Traffic Safety Grant; declaring the City's eligibility for such grant; authorizing the Chief of the Houston Police Department to act as the City's representative in the application process, to accept such grant funds, if awarded, and to apply for and accept all subsequent awards, if any, pertaining to the program

Background:

The Houston Police Department is applying for the FY 2018 Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Commercial Motor Vehicle Traffic Safety Grant from the Texas Department of Transportation in the amount of $399,999.71.  The grant period becomes effective October 1, 2017 and ends September 30, 2018.  The City is required to make a cash match of $30,000.77 and an in-kind contribution of $463,607.54.  The total cost of the program is $893,608.02.

 

This grant funding will be used to provide overtime for personnel over the next 12 months to enforce commercial motor vehicle speeding, occupant protection, as well as increase and sustain high visibility enforcement of traffic safety-related laws.  The City’s in-kind contribution consists of fringe benefits and court costs of the operational personnel, and the costs of operating police patrol vehicles in the program.

 

Funding for this item is included in the FY2018 Adopted Budget; therefore, no Fiscal Note is required as stated in the Financial Policy Ordinance No. 2014-1078.
